I recently decommissioned the last Ubuntu server in my rack and replaced it with NixOS. My entire rack is Nix at this point 😅 I never saw that coming, even a year ago haha.
A live photo frame is just a linux system that automatically logs in and launches a full screen slide show. The goal is to make it boot quickly, maybe with a nice plymouth splash screen or no terminal output with a blank boot up.
I wanted modern Windows to work as a developer desktop but damn if this doesn't feel janky 😂
Being able to remotely decrypt your critical infrastructure is such a gawd sent. You get the ability to power cycle devices for security updates, and not stress about being in front of the rack.
A few faithful applications to bridge the UX failings, Hyper-V running a small NixOS virtual machine, Windows terminal in Quake mode... Yea, it feels pretty good.
The more you have, the more you need
The more logs I began to collect, the more I needed to have from every device. I love the visibility ❤️
Collecting log data with rsyslog
.
Recording of events, messages, and activities generated by various components within a system gives you visibility and real data that can be used to trouble shoot and test.
